GATTON grows in most soil types providing they are well-drained, moist and fertile, although some varieties are tolerant of lower fertility and poorer drainage. Tolerance of low soil pH and high Al+++ saturation is also variable.

It is important to keep in mind that this variety requires fertile soils, is intolerant of water-logging, intolerant of heavy grazing and becomes stemmy in not cut out grazed frequently.
